Funeral services for Gus Hoffmeyer, Jr., 84, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Fran Elrod will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 20, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.

Mr. Hoffmeyer died peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2013. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Gus and Nelle Humphries Hoffmeyer, Sr. He was a lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees.

Gus was a 1946 graduate of Hartsville High School and was president of his senior class. He attended Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. He played on the USC tennis team and belonged to Lambda Chi Fraternity. In 1963, he was selected as Hartsville's Outstanding Man of the Year.

He was a Mason, Shriner, member and 1978 president of the Prestwood Country Club, Hartsville City Councilman, served 8 years on the Darlington County School Board and was a member of the Blowing Rock Country Club (NC). He was a member of the Darlington County Industrial Development Board of which he was chairman when Klopman Mills came to Darlington Co. He was also the oldest member of the Darlington County Gamecock Club (60 plus years), a member of the Hartsville Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years and served as Captain and Assistant Chief, a member of the S.C. National Guard for 42 years and served his last 4 years as a full time State Command Sgt. Major in Columbia, SC. He received the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Campbell in 1989 and was a member of the first group inducted in the Enlisted Hall of Fame for the National Guard at McCrady Training Center in 2006. He retired from the S.C. Employment Security after 34 years of service as a Field Deputy supervisor.

Surviving are his wife, Joan "Snod" Snoddy Hoffmeyer of Hartsville, SC;son, Gus (Shelly) Hoffmeyer, III of Columbia, SC; daughters, Mary Nell Smith of Garden City, SC, Kay (Dennis) Holley of Hartsville, SC, Meg Miller, of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Jo (Scott) Nelson, Courtney Smith, Phillip Hunnicutt, Matt McKee, Eric McKee, Meredith Miller, Andrew Miller, great-grandchildren, Porter Vance Hunnicutt, Leila Katherine Nelson.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Wesley United Methodist Church for the Children and Youth programs.
