LOCAL LADY'S UNTIMELY DEATH
Miss Helen Hatch succumbed to Shock While Mountain Climbing
An atmosphere of gloom surrounds the entire city today in consequence of the shocking news received last evening of the death at Glacier, B. C. of Miss Helen Hatch, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Hatch.
Miss Hatch was an enthusiastic mountain climber and on Friday night last left Lethbridge with Mrs. C. J. Eckstorm and Miss Lucille Eckstorm [to] participate in the meet in the Alpine Club at Rogers Pass on the main line of the C.P.R. close to the C.P.R. resort at Glacier. It may be mentioned that last year Miss Hatch gained the distinction of climbing the Crow's Nest Mountain.
Early last evening Mr. Eckstorm received a message from his wife stating that Miss Hatch had met with a severe accident and the worst was feared. An hour or so later the gravest fears of the family and the friends in this city were realized when Mr. Eckstorm received another message announcing that Miss Hatch had succumbed. The telegram intimated that Miss Hatch had a simple stumble evidently while mountain climbing and the shock caused heart failure resulting in her death. The remains left Glacier at 12:40 today and are expected to reach Lethbridge tomorrow afternoon on the local.
Probably no death in the history of this city has occasioned as much genuine sorrow. Miss Hatch was a clever and accomplished girl and was strikingly beautiful. Though of a retiring disposition every person who knew the young lady admired the beauty of her character and her untimely death has aroused sympathy with her heart broken parents and sisters in every circle in the city.
Miss Hatch was born in Big Timber, Mont., and was 21 years of age. She graduated from the High School there with the highest honors into the University of Missoula. She had been living in Lethbridge for the last couple of years. Besides her father and mother she leaves three sisters; Eda, who has been attending the University of Missoula, Judith and Phyllis. Miss Hatch had been a member of the staff of the Union Bank for some months.

Gravesite Details

There is no cemetery record of her burial from this early period, but news accounts say she was buried here. It is assumed she is near her father.
