Mary Hellen was born to Edward Trail and Minnie Gray. She was the oldest of four children and the only daughter. Her brothers' names were Charles Reed, William Edward, and Hallard Claud.

She married Calvin Bennet Pulcher on 2 Sep 1930 in Murphysboro, Illinois.

Seven children were born into this family: Freddie Levarn, Donald Wayne, Dorothy Jean, Mary Evelyn, Patsy Ruth, Jerry Lee, and Robert Allen. Freddie and Jerry both died as children.

In 1950, the family packed up and left Southern Illinois for Central Illinois.
