Calvin was born to Alexander Pulcher and Edith McBride. Another son, Harry, was born to the couple.

Calvin spent most of his life in Southern Illinois. He worked in the coal mines in Jackson County.

He married Mary Hellen Trail on 2 Sep 1930 in Murphysboro. Six children were born and raised in Southern Illinois: Freddie Levarn, Donald Wayne, Dorothy Jean, Mary Evelyn, Patsy Ruth, and Jerry Lee. Freddie and Jerry died as children.

The family moved to Central Illinois during 1950. They lived in Illiopolis and later in Decatur. They were blessed with their last child, Robert Allen.

Calvin worked at DeKalb Chicken Farms and later retired from Caterpillar.

He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church. He enjoyed raising Beagle Hounds.

In the early 1980s, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. During the latter part of his life, he lived with his daughter, Mary, and her husband.
