Philipp Birnbaum was born August 16, 1862 in Kandel, Bayern-Pfalz (now Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany). He was the youngest living child of Johann George Birnbaum and Anna Barbara Hanss. In 1881, at the age of 19, Philipp emigrated to the United States, at the same time as his older brother Carl (although on 2 different ships). Their older siblings George and Margaretha had already emigrated, and settled in the rural environs of Detroit, Michigan. Philipp and Carl followed them to Detroit, and Philipp made his home in Springwells Township - very close to sister Margaretha Birnbaum Jehle.

On August 20, 1887, Philipp married Wilhelmina Krause in Detroit. Wilhelmina is the younger sister of Carl Birnbaum's wife Eliza Krause. Philipp and Wilhelmina had 3 children:

1889 - Augusta
1891 - Carl
1893 - Louise

For a number of years, Philipp worked as a caretaker at Woodmere Cemetery, and he and his family lived in a house on the cemetery grounds.

Philipp died in Detroit on September 11, 1932, at the age of 70 years. His wife Wilhelmina lived another 13 years. They are buried together in Woodmere Cemetery, along with Wilhelmina's mother Louise Krause, and one infant grandson Victor Betker.
