James A. Jessop

Funeral services for James A. Jessop, 82, of 2248 Maryland will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Wall-Diffenderfer chapel.
Burial will be in the Mount Hope cemetery.

Jessop died Friday night in a local hospital. He was born in Guelph, Ontario, June 24, 1870, and moved to Kansas with his parents when he was 17.
He moved to Topeka in 1903 to work for the Santa Fe railroad. Later he became a carpenter, contractor, farmer and a real estate salesman. From 1917 to 1925, he farmed near Lyndon and the next 15 years he was a real estate salesman in Topeka. He retired in 1940. He was a member of First Presbyterian church.

On November 23, 1892, Jessop married Sophia Hutchinson. She died December 11, 1941. They had 12 children. On April 4, 1944, he married Rachel Cummings.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Rachel Jessop of the home; eight daughters, Mrs. James Horton of Eastland, Tex., Mrs. Henry Bell of Lyndon, Mrs. John Baker of Amarillo, Mrs. Russell B. Allen of Virginia Beach, Va., Mrs. Charlie Howard of Michigan Valley, Mrs. Frank Whitford of Winnetka, Ill.Mrs. George Carothers of 1227 Kellam, and Mrs. Joe Eklund of 1211 Woodward; three sons, Frank Jessop of Lyndon, William Jessop of Eastland, Tex., and Wayne Jessop of 614 Twiss; two sisters, Mrs. J.L. Thayer of Abilene and Mrs. Etta Dorsey of Ellensburgh, Wash.; a brother, W.R. Jessop of 815 Garfield; 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Another son, Charlie Jessop, was killed in action in World War I.
