NOTE:

Jacob "Jake" Gillespie was the youngest child of Marcellus Melanthon "M.M." Gillespie & Damaris Tandy (Benson) Gillespie. Jake Gillespie's mother and father had been born in Missouri and traveled the Oregon Trail separately in wagon trains in 1851 and 1852 with their parents and siblings.

Jake Gillespie was the grandson of Rev. Jacob E. Gillespie, Lane County pioneer and the first Presbyterian minister in Oregon. In 1853 Rev. Gillespie founded the Cumberland Presbyterian Church (now the Central Presbyterian Church) in Eugene.

Jake Gillespie was also the grandson of Sarah "Sally" Scott Tandy, a widow who joined a wagon train to the Oregon Territory with her young daughters in tow.

GILLESPIE - Jacob Gillespie of 1115 Gilham Road died August 31, 1957. He was born February 6, 1885, on a farm north of Eugene where he spent his entire life. He was born to pioneer parents, Marcellus Gillespie and Demaris (Benson) Gillespie, who came to Eugene as children in 1851 and 1852. He was married to Myrtle Corum October 27, 1912, in Eugene. Besides his wife, Myrtle, he is survived by 1 son, John Gillespie of Eugene; 2 daughters; Mrs. Gladys Perry of Eugene and Mrs. Alice Blair of Vancouver, Wash.; 1 sister, Mrs. Minda Gilham of Eugene; 2 brothers; Walter of Creswell and Ralph of Eugene; also 7 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 2, 1957 at 2 p.m. in Simon-Lounsbury Mortuary with interment in Gillespie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Norkenzie Christian Church Building Fund.
