GILLESPIE - Marcellus Gillespie, age 71, of 1458 Ferry St., passed away at a local hospital on Monday, January 19, 1948. He was born in Lane County, Oregon on February 15, 1876 and has always resided in this community. He is survived by a daughter, Junita (sh/be Juanita) Bennett of Imnaha, Oregon; three grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. William Gilham of Eugene; three brothers, Walter E. Gillespie of Creswell, Ralph and Jacob both of Eugene. Funeral services will be held at the Simon Chapel on Thursday, January 22, 1948 at 1 p.m. with interment in the McCulloch Cemetery. ~~~END~~~
NOTE: Marcellus Gillespie married Lavina Elmira Pittman on July 3, 1900 in Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon.
Marcellus Gillespie was the eldest son of Marcellus Melanthon Gillespie & Damaris Tandy (Benson) Gillespie, both of whom were born in Missouri and traveled on the Oregon Trail in wagon trains in 1851-52 with their parents and siblings. M.M. & Damaris Gillespie farmed in the Willakenzie (northeast) area of Eugene their entire married lives.
Marcellus Gillespie was the grandson of Rev. Jacob E. Gillespie, Lane County pioneer and the first Presbyterian minister in Oregon. In 1853 Rev. Gillespie founded the Cumberland Presbyterian Church (now the Central Presbyterian Church) in Eugene. Gillespie Butte in Eugene is named for Rev. Gillespie as it stands on his Donation Land Claim of October 1852.
Marcellus Gillespie was also the grandson of Sarah "Sally" Scott Tandy, a widow without a husband, who joined a wagon train to the Oregon Territory with her young daughters in tow.
The area of "Gillespie Corners" near the town of Lorane is named for Marcellus Gillespie and his younger brother Walter Gillespie, both of whom owned land and operated farms on opposite corners in the area.
The cause of his death was a pulmonary embolism after surgery.
