Civil War: Company G, 147th New York Infantry
Alfred A. Stratton was born in New York in the Fall of 1844. He was an 18-year-old blacksmith when he enlisted at Ellicott, Chautauqua County, New York, August 19, 1863, as a substitute for August Lass, who had been drafted. He was mustered into Company G, 147th New York Infantry. Private Stratton was severely wounded by cannon shot at Petersburg, Virginia, June 18, 1864, requiring the amputation of both arms. He was promoted to sergeant and mustered out for disability at Alexandria, Virginia, October 3, 1864. He filed for a disability pension October 8, 1864, and received application No. 52,698 and certificate No. 35,996. After the war he married Julia Elizabeth Johnson at Brooklyn, New York, in 1865, and made his home in Washington, D.C. He was admitted to the Northwestern Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from September 2 until November 25, 1872, at which time he returned to his home in Washington, D. C., where he remained until he died. Alfred A. Stratton was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery June 16, 1874. After Alfred's death Julia filed for a survivor's pension August 17, 1874, and received application No. 216,887 and certificate No. 168,518. Julia married John J. Sweeney at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., June 15, 1877, and filed for minor children's pensions February 12, 1879, receiving application No. 241,450 and certificate No. 184,250. During the Spanish-American War, Alfred and Julia's son, Henry "Harry" Draper Stratton, enlisted as a private in 1899 and was mustered into Company E, 18th U.S. Infantry.
