Enlisted on Jan. 1, 1862, at Middleport, Illinois, in Co. C, 51st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He was wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia and died of his wounds at Chattanooga, TN, Hospital #2. He was probably put in one of the cool caves, as was the custom, and interred Jan. 1, 1867 in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
His children were Agnes, John Franklin, Edwin and Rebecca A. Hoel.
