Russian composer and songwriter. A. k. a. Nicholas Brodzky. Brodzsky wrote music used in more than 40 films (some posthumously), most in Hollywood, including Small Town Girl (1953), Meet Me in Las Vegas (1955) (which included the song "I Refuse to Rock and Roll," written for Marlene Dietrich), and Serenade in Rio. (He also wrote operettas and other music for the stage throughout his career, and worked as a film director in Britain.) He left Germany for Austria, and then on to Hungary and at last to England, in 1936. In 1948 he travelled to the U. S. to work in Hollywood, and stayed on to become a U. S. citizen. His biggest success was three songs he wrote for Mario Lanza. His film songs received five Oscar nominations.
