Joseph Robert Baker and his parents and siblings moved to Greenbrier County, WV, by horse-drawn road wagon in 1898 when he was six years old. They lived in Greenbrier and Nicholas Counties. His parents were Francis Baker (son of James William and Fannie Ellis Baker) and Lizzie Fudge Mitchell (daughter of Charles aka Charter Mitchell and Martha Cameron).

He married Nannie Whitt of Tazewell County and they had four children. Nannie died of pneumonia on her 30th birthday on April 3, 1925.

Robert Baker remarried Gertrude Lewallen (Morris) in 1928, and they had ten children. They lived in Greenbrier and Fayette Counties.

His family, including him, had diphtheria in 1907, when he lost three younger siblings within one week. These were Mildred, James, and Margaret who are buried in the Baker Family Graveyard on Butler's Mountain near Renick in Greenbrier County. In 1918, during the flu epidemic which killed many in this country, he was afflicted but recovered completely. He said, "A lot of people never got over it," being permanently weakened.

Until his death in 1982 (pseudomenbranous enterocolitis secondary to antibiotic), he read the newpaper every day without glasses, and continued to plow and plant his garden every spring and summer.

Interestingly, Robert Baker had Rh negative blood, as did both of his wives, allowing for the unlikely and serendipitous offspring of fourteen healthy children, all Rh negative.
