Delsa Asay Rounds: Nov. 23, 1911 - Feb. 15, 2013
Delsa Asay Rounds passed away on Feb 15, 2013 in Salt Lake City, UT surrounded by her loving children. Delsa was born on Nov 23, 1911 in Lovell, WY to Aaron and Myra Isabell Hatch Asay. She was born in the very home in which she resided for most of her life. Delsa attended the Lovell Public Schools, and one of her most cherished memories was playing on the Lovell High School girls' varsity basketball team. Some of the old-timers have enthusiastically commented on her athleticism and agility. However, because of her mother's ill health, she and her mother moved to Delta, Utah for her senior year, where she graduated as the class salutatorian. Soon after, they moved back to Lovell.
On January 14, 1933, Delsa married Harold Rounds. To this union three children were born: Don Wayne, Beverly and Loretta. Together Delsa and Harold owned and operated a jukebox business, having Wurlitzer jukeboxes located in local business establishments scattered throughout northern Wyoming and southern Montana. Delsa was in charge of maintaining a phonograph record shop in support of the growing business. This entailed ordering the latest records from the national recording studios, determining which songs and recording artists would most likely be favorably received by the teenaged 'bobby-soxers' in the local drug store malt shops. She also managed all the financial and business records for their business.
Delsa was also a devoted member of her church and served in many different positions over the years: Jr. Sunday School coordinator, mutual teacher, librarian, and she worked in the church LDS genealogy program. She was a faithful visiting teacher who was always seen bringing meals to people and helping in any way that she could. In addition, Delsa had a beautiful soprano voice and loved singing in the ward and stake choirs.
She and Harold were later divorced. Now being a single mother and sole wage earner for three growing children, Delsa was employed by J.C. Penney Co. as the bookkeeper for many years. She later worked as the Town Treasurer for a total of 18 years. Mayor Cal Taggart said, "Hiring Delsa was the best move I ever made during the six years I was mayor. Delsa started a filing system that future clerks could understand, and when she retired, they hired three people to replace her."
Delsa was multi-talented: She was an excellent cook and was famous for her delicious pies and rolls; she loved to crochet and do embroidery; Delsa spent countless hours making hundreds of quilts over the years while enjoying the association of family and friends. She was a devoted daughter, an exceptional mother and grandmother and a beloved Aunt. She always saw the glass half-full and had a heart brimming with compassion, unconditional love and acceptance for everyone. She cared for her ailing mother for many years and spent countless hours visiting the nursing home and taking care of her sisters, brothers, nephews and friends as their health declined. Over the many years, she spent countless hours watching over and decorating the graves of her loved ones.
Delsa is survived by her children: Don (Ursula) Rounds, Beverly Lorz, Loretta (Bruce) Cook. Delsa had 7 grandchildren: Steven (Sharon) Rounds, Debbie (Brad) Haslam, Brenda (Scott) Bennett, Brian Lorz, Catherine (Jon) Olsen, Matthew (Marianne) Lorz, Stacey Jo, (Scott & LeeAnn) Madsen. 24 great grandchildren: Danny (Kelly) Rounds, Kimberly (Ryan) Lewis, Amanda (Lucas) Maes, Eric and Paul Haslam, Vincent (Erin) Haslam, Aaron (Danielle) Haslam, Emily (Matt) Rogers, Meagan (Adam) Henrie, Christopher (Ashley) Bennett, Aaron, Stephen, David, & Catherine Bennett, Ethan, Madison Delsa and Jacob Olsen, Nathan, Daniel and Marie Lorz, Andrew, Meagan, Lauren and Emma Madsen. 7 great, great grandchildren: Avery and Molly Haslam, Jack and Charlie Rogers, Dahlia Lewis, Oliver Haslam, and Lily Bennett.
Delsa was preceded in death by her parents Aaron and Myra Asay; brothers David, Lyle, John and Joseph Asay; and sisters Phoebe Asay Nicholls, Virginia Asay Sorensen, Isabell Asay Millett, Chloe Asay McArthur, Elsie Asay Oberg and Ireta Asay. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter Stacey Jo Cook Madsen and three great grandchildren Eric and Paul Haslam and Andrew Madsen.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the LDS Chapel. Viewings will be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Haskell Mortuary and Saturday prior to the funeral, from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. at the LDS Church
