Arthur was wounded in action when a mortar shell fell into his foxhole in Guam, Marianas Islands. His body was recovered from the beach and taken on board the USS Rixey (APH03). He had extensive wounds to his right thighs, legs, and arms. He died of his wounds 22 July 1944.
He was initially buried 24 July 1944 in Grave 14, Row 3, Army, Navy & Marine Cemetery 1, Guam, Marianas Islands. After the war, on 15 August 1947, his family requested his body be returned to the U.S. This request was approved 17 September 1947 and his body was returned 22 March 1948 for final burial at Mountain View Cemetery, Greer, Greenville Co., S.C. Wood’s Mortuary Inc., West Poinsett St., Greenville, SC, was in charge of the burial
