Mary Etta McGrath was born on the Island of Hurricane off the coast of Maine. Her mother Helen Jones Benner had been widowed in 1886 and married her father John McGrath who was divorced. She had several half siblings and two younger brothers. Her father often used the name of his stepfather which was Fleming. Both of her younger brothers, George and Thomas went by Fleming. Their parents' death certs give their names as McGrath, but their gravestone says Fleming as you can see nearby. So try not to be confused. Mary met and married David Davis in 1905. Mame canned, sewed on a footpaddle driven machine, braided rugs and performed many chores without modern conveniences. After they got electricity her daughter bought her a vacuum cleaner. She did the laundry in a wringer washer with water from the rain barrel which she heated on the wood stove in the kitchen. The mail was delivered by RFD route and Mame would get a ride with the mailman or a neighbor to go to town as her husbend never owned a car. On Fridays Freddie the fish man came to the dooryard in his green truck. If mame needed dry cleaning she put a cardboard sign in the window. The milkman came regularly and the Cushman man stopped by with baked goods if the "C" was placed in the window.
Mame baked bread and kept the donut jar full with donuts cooked in lard. Her husband wanted biscuits every night so she made them daily. She did all this until her husband Dave had a stroke and they moved to their daughter's home in Massachusetts in 1958. She enjoyed trying new recipes and listening in on the party line.
