Mrs. L M. McAlpin Passes In Her Sleep: Services Tuesday

Mrs. L. M. (Katherin) Mc Alpin at the age of 87 answered her summons to another life quietly and peacefully Monday morning at the home of her son, Newman McAlpin, with whom she had resided since the death of her husband in 1938.

Her still body was discovered in her bed shortly before 6 a.m. when her son entered her bedroom to arouse her for breakfast. The family physician stated that she had been dead only a short while.

A large host of friends and loved ones gathered at First Baptist Church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon to pay their last respects to his beloved lady who had been a source of inspiration to everyone who was privileged to know her intimately. The beautiful display of floral offerings which surrounded the casket and outlined the walls of the sanctuary expressed the esteem in which she was held and was a visible tribute to the wonderful christian life which she had so radiantly lived. Rev. C. A. Webb, Rev. Jerry Slonaker and Rev. E. A. Hester officiated with interment following in the Sharon cemetery under the direction of Mims Mitchell Funeral Home.

The passing of "Granny" McAlpin, as she was affectionately known by her host of friends and admirers, marked the passing of the last survivor of a second generation of settlers who came West from Georgia to settle in Smith County. She had lived in this section for a lifetime and had reared a family of ten children, 8 sons and 2 daughters, all of whom are still living.

Over her long span of years, there were many highlights in her life, but chiefest of these was the opportunity to live for a lifetime in the same community with the most of her ten children and to watch each of them undergo their individual successes and to take their respective positions of responsibility in hteir (sic their) chosen fields of vocation . . . being permitted not only to share with them their achievements but to enjoy the warmth and complete devotion generated from the unbroken circle.

Her life was a shining example of christian motherhood and to the end, she was found faithful in her church life. Through her dedication and faithfulness, many have received the assurance that is sufficient to sustain them in hours of trials and tribulations.

''Granny" McAlpin had lived and active life and in the past few years had become an ardent fisherman. Approximately two years ago she sustained a broken arm while on a fishing trip, but such an injury did not dampen her spirit or hamper her desire for her favorite pasttime.

Just a few days prior to her passing, she related to one son that she was anxiously awaiting warm weather so she could again get her fishing equipment and enjoy the comfort of the nearness to mother nature and the great outdoors.

From our midst has passed a wonderful lady and the void that has been created through her passing will be felt keenly in the lives of many.

Active pall barers were grandsons: L. J. McAlpin. L. C. McAlpin, Jeff McAlpin, Mavk Gardner, Dalton McAlpin, Delmas McAlpin, O. D. McAlpin and Jack McAlpin.

Survivors include 8 sons, C. N., E. T.. Rev. Z. B.. N. C, G. G., and F. M. McAlpin, all of Magee; N. N. McAlpin. Jackson; W. D. McAlpin, Mt. Olive; 2 daughters, Mrs. Thomas Gardner, Mt. Olive; Mrs. Lionel Sullivan, Magee; 35 grand children and 49 great grand children.
