Emily Louisa Montgomery is a direct descendant of Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, the namesake of the City of Rochester. She was baptized on 14 June 1826 in St. Luke's Church, Rochester, NY.

Emily Louisa Montgomery and Frederick William Backus were married on 28 Oct. 1847 in Rochester at the home of Mr. Harvey Montgomery. Emily Louisa Montgomery and Frederick William Backus had the following children before Frederick died in 1862:
