Civil War Confederate Army Officer. He was a Mexican War veteran and battalion commander in Lieutenant General A.P. Hill's Army of Northern Virginia Third Corps during the Civil War. Born in Pulaski County, Georgia, he was a wealthy pre-War slave and land owner. From 1856 to 1857 he served as the sherriff of Sumter County. Unpon the outbreak of the war, he became the Captain of the Sumter (Georgia) Flying Artillery Battery and was quickly promoted to Major on May 22, 1862. Noted for his bravery by Major General Jeb Stuart, Cutts was quickly promoted to command of a battalion of artillery. His finest moment in the War was probably the repulse of the Union attack at Petersburg on June 20, 1864. After the War, he served in the state legislature, as a law officer, and as a city mayor. He died in Americus Georgia.
