Irene's first marriage was to Ira Oliver Hughes on Nov. 12, 1918 in Lake County, OH. They had two sons together; Elmer D. and Walter G. Hughes.

After Ira's death, Irene married Arvo Brenoph Pernoja on June 11, 1949 in Painesville, Lake County, OH. Although Irene was last married to Arvo Pernoja, she chose to be buried next to her first husband, Ira Hughes, and share his name on her headstone.

Services for Irene V, Pernoja, 86, a lifetime resident of Painesville, are pending for Monday at Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville. Mrs. Pernoja died Wednesday at LakeEast Hospital in Painesville after a lengthy illness. She was born July 24, 1902, in Painesville. She was a member of First Church of Christ in Painesville and the Loyal Men and Women's Class of the church. She was also a member of Blue Star Mothers and Painesville Senior Citizens.
Survivors are her sons, Elmer and Walter Hughes, both of Painesville; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Ira, died in 1947. Three brothers and three sisters are deceased. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Painesville. The family suggests contributions be made to the First Church of Christ Memorial Fund.
