A service for Stephen Brooks "Steve" was held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the Perry Bible Church. Visitation was after 1:00 p.m. Friday with family present 6-8 p.m. at the church. Hastings Funeral Home in Perry was in charge of making arrangements. Rev. Charles Compton provided words of comfort. Honorary bearers were: Alan Downes, Charlie Bye and Scott Schoen. Casket bearers were: Jim Kilts, Mike Fagen, Bob Moses, Tim Kilts, Matt Kilts and Seth Ashby. Randy McCalley was the musician. Old Man River and September Song were the songs played. Following the service was a luncheon at the Perry Bible Church. Interment took place at the Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. Stephen Gale Brooks, son of Gale Brooks and Evangeline Van Breemen Brooks was born June 21, 1949 in Perry, Iowa and died February 5, 2013 in Ogden, Iowa at the age of 63. Steve grew up in Perry and graduated from Perry High School. He served in the United States Army from 1968 until 1970 where he received a National Defense Service Medal before his Honorable Discharge. In November of 1970, Steve was united in marriage to Wanda Lapp. They were blessed with two sons, Eric and Daniel. Steve worked at Bauer Bilt Tire and Oscar Meyer in Perry and Woodward Resource Center. In July of 1976, Steve and Pamela Joan Landals Johnson, were united in marriage in Omaha, Nebraska. Pamela became a step-mother to Eric and Daniel while Steve became a step-father to Scott. They lived in Woodward, Iowa and were blessed with five more additions to their family: Stephen, Amanda, Reanna, Donovan and Rebecca. He became a member of the Woodward Christian Church. Steve enjoyed fishing, gardening and farming. He liked racing his stock car #00 and going down the road on his motorcycle and was an owner operator of semi-trucks. In 2002, he moved north of Ogden to an acreage. Bread making was one of his specialties and he loved to cook and read. He enjoyed learning about anything. Steve is preceded in death by his father Gale; wife Pamela (1997) and stillborn son Donovan Andrew (1986). Steve is survived by his mother: Evangeline Brooks of Kokomo, IN; his children: Scott Johnson (Angela) of Newton; Dan Brooks (Jamie) of Peoria, AZ; Stephen Brooks of Lodi, NJ; Eric Brooks of Winterset; Amanda Tallman of Ogden; Reanna Lile (David) of Boone; and Rebecca Brooks (Kiel Morrison) of Auckland, New Zealand; eleven grandchildren: Mackenzie Johnson, Mackayla Johnson, Norah Brooks, Elijah Brooks, Mason Warren, Lora Warren, Matthew Tallman, Rachel Tallman, Owen Tallman, Bailey Lile and Brooke Lile; four sisters: Nancy Swanson (Bill) of Kokomo, Indiana; Elaine Bye (Charles) of Lucerne, Indiana; Laurie Richardson (Dan) of Des Moines; and Roberta Ashby (Mike) of Guthrie Center; aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
