The United States' first African-American Ambassador. He was also a lawyer, judge and civil rights pioneer. In 1942 he was appointed assistant state attorney general for New York. From 1949 until 1954 he became ambassador to Liberia, and in 1964 he won a seat on the New York State Supreme Court, where he remained until 1985.
