Herman Pohl, 78, Buried Tuesday

Community Resident 52 Yrs.

Deceased Had Been in Failing
Health Three Years -- Passed
Away Saturday

Herman Pohl, 8 miles southwest of Baldwin passed away Saturday evening,
January 2, 1937, at the home of his son, Walter. He had been in failing health
about three years.
He was born in Stettin, Germany, on April 1, 1859, and came to America in
1883, locating for one year at Savannah, Mo., after which he came to a farm one-
half mile south of Worden. Six years later he moved to a farm 5 miles southeast
of Worden which has been his home for 46 years.
He was married to Augusta Hackstein of Beaver Dam, Wis, in 1887. Seven
children were born to this union. His wife preceeded him in death nine years
ago, and two sons died in infancy.
Surviving him are: Henry Pohl, Mrs. Birger Nelson, Mrs. Chester Gibson,
Walter Pohl, and Ernest Pohl, and 13 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. John
Sturm of Clearfield, Kansas.
Mr. Pohl was a model citizen of the community and was well liked by many
friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held from the Worden Evangelical
church of which he was a member on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. E. E. Reep
officiating. Burial was in the Worden Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Flory,
Henry Fleer, Arthur Lutz, Ben Nelson, Ben Gibson and Conrad Gastrock. Mrs. Fred
Helm and Miss Nellie Leuf, accompanied by Mrs. Ivan Schwartz, sang at the funeral
and the grave.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Sturm
and sons John Jr., George and Dan, Mr. and Mrs Henry Deckwa and son Wesley Deckwa
and Herbert Laurenz all of Clearfield, Kans: Mr. and Mrs. David Sturm, Arlene and
Marvin of Wellsville, Mr. and Mrs. John Murdock of Edgerton, Mr. and Mrs. F. W.
Steen of Harris, Kans: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Koehler and Edna, Mrs. Ernest Leary, Mrs
Bert Day, Mrs. Phil Commons and daughter Phillis all of Lawrence, Orliff Steen
of Ottawa, Perry Stover of Baldwin, Miss Marie Allison of Savannah, Mo.

Hermann appeared on the 1930 Douglas County, Kansas census, Willows Springs Twp, living with his youngest son, Ernest and family. On this census, he noted his birthplace was Neuendorf, Germany.
