He was the son of Davis and America Serina (Towry) Swinford and married Bertha Irene Scott - 14 Aug 1926 - Lincoln Co., Tennessee. His obituaries follow:

Elgie J. Swinford of the Unity community died at his residence Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. He was 81.

Services were Tuesday afternoon at Gallant Funeral Home with Lewis Ellenburg officiating. Burial was in Riverview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Swinford was a native of Lincoln County, son of the late Davis and America Towry Swinford. His wife, Mrs. Bertha Irene Scott Swinford, died in 1978, He was a retired farmer and a member of Unity Church of Christ.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Alvarene (Pat) Askins of Fayetteville; two sons, Nolen Swinford and Thomas E. Swinford, both of Huntsville; three sisters, Mrs. Pina May, Mrs. Zella Barnes, and Mrs. Annie Sue Barnes, all of Fayetteville; a brother, Hurley Swinford, of Fayetteville; four grandchildren and three great-gandchildren.

Burial was to be in Riverview Memorial Gardens. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Alverine Askins of Fayetteville; two sons, Nolen Swinford and Thomas E. Swinford, both of Huntsville; three sisters, Mrs. Pina May, Mrs. Zela Barnes and Mrs. Annie Sue Barnes, all of Fayetteville; a brother, Hurley Swinford of Fayetteville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
