Funeral services for Hope Cottington Engelby, 78, were held Wednesday at the Christian Church in Stanhope with the Rev. William Van Dam officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Jewell.
Mrs. Engelby, a lifelong resident of the Stratford-Stanhope area, died May 2, 1982 at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames where she had been a patient for eight days. She had been in ill health for a year.
Hope Cottington, daughter of Sydney and Serena Kent Cottington, was born July 28, 1903, northwest of Stanhope. She attended rural schools and graduated from Webster City High School. She was a bookkeeper at the Farmers Elevator at Stanhope and on June 18, 1925, she was married to Joseph Engelby at Stanhope.
The couple farmed in the Stanhope area for many years and she was preceded in death by her husband in April of 1971. She continued to live on the family farm until 1978 when she suffered a stroke and then moved into the Stratford Care Center where she had since been a resident.
She is survived by three sons and two daughters, Dale S. Engelby of Phoenix, Doris (Mrs. Ralph) Rohling of Mundelein, Ill., Duane C. Engelby of Stanhope, Mary Jo (Mrs. Marvin) Johnson of Stratford, and Rick D. Engelby of Cedar Rapids; 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister and two brothers, Honor Coats of Jewell, Clare Cottington of Boone and Beryl Cottington of Stanhope.
She was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers, one of whom died in infancy.
She was a member of the Christian Church at Stanhope and the Christian Women's Fellowship. She had been a county president of the Federated Women's Club and she belonged to the YMW Club and she was county committeewoman for 4H. She was also 1961 District Mother of the Year.
