BERYL COTTINGTON

Beryl Cottington, 88, of the Stratford Care Center, and a former Stanhope area resident, passed away at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa on Wednesday, January 5, 1994.

Services were held Saturday, January 8, at the Christian Church in Stanhope with Rev. Richard Morris officiating. Interment was in South Marion Cemetery, south of Stratford.

The Stanhope Parish Choir, accompanied by Jerry Kent, sang: "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "In the Garden". Alveta Kent sang "May The Good Lord Bless And Keep You" as a benediction.

Pallbearers were: Brian Wilcox, Benny Wilcox, Bruce Wilcox, Nathan Cottington, Brent Cottington, David Cottington and Kevin Cottington. Honorary bearers were: Angela Zenk, Brenda Formanek, Kaye Langstraat, Stacey Cottington, Kelly Cottington, Johanna Cottington and Deanne Cottington.

Beryl Cottington, son of Sydney and Serena (Kent) Cottington, was born March 13, 1905 on a farm northwest of Stanhope. He attended rural school and graduated from Stanhope High School in 1923. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1928 and started employment with Standard Oil in Huron, South Dakota.

On April 17, 1929, he married Helen Arlene Carlson at Stratford. The couple resided in Huron until 1944 when they were transferred with Standard Oil to Des Moines. They moved to a farm east of Stanhope in 1948 and moved to Stanhope upon retirement in 1968.

While farming, he served as office manager for the Wehrheim Sales Barn in Webster City. For 25 years he had operated an H&R Block tax service. His wife died in December, 1991. For the past five years, he had resided at the Stratford Care Center.

He is survived by sons, Merrill of Boone, Iowa, Gary of Pella, Iowa and Nyle of Jewell, Iowa; a daughter, Darla Wilcox of Stratford; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Honor Coats, Stratford; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Beryl was a member of the Christian Church in Stanhope, the Lions Club for over 50 years and also a charter member of the Stanhope Lions Club. He was also a past district governor and past state treasurer of the Lions. He served in many areas of 4-H leadership in Hamilton County and was a longtime treasurer of the South Hamilton School system.

Foster Funeral Home of Webster City was in charge of arrangements.
