ELM GROVE FARMER LOSES LIFE IN BUTTERNUT CREEK

Aaron Hammond, aged fifty-six years; was drowned in Butternut creek just back of his home at Elm Grove Friday morning of last week at about 10 o'clock. Mr. Hammond had just emptied some ashes and for some unknown reason ventured upon the ice, which broke under his weight. His loud calls for help as he clung to the edge of the ice were heard at Benjamin's Mill, but persons there were unable to locate the source of the cries until it was too late to aid Mr. Hammond. His mittens were found on the ice near the hole. The body was recovered some distance downstream with the use of ladders and hooks, after having been in the water for half an hour. Dr. Hall of Gilbertsville, who happened to be in Morris, was called but pronounced the man dead. Coroner Bishop of Garrattsville gave a verdict of accidental drowning.

Mr. Hammond was born in the town of Morris, a son of Henry and Mary (Clinton) Hammond. He married Miss Carrie Daniels at Dimmock Hollow, November 22, 1892. His early occupation was that of a cheesemaker and later he conducted a small farm at Dimmock Hollow. He sold that place a few years ago and purchased the Seeley place near Morris village where he had since resided. He and his son-in-law, Frank Benedict, conducted a prosperous chicken farm. He was a musician of note and had played cornet in many bands and orchestras in that vicinity. He was a devoted member of the Morris Baptist church and was always active in its affairs. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge of Morris.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Benedict; one grandson; two sisters, Mrs. John Breffle, Morris, and Mrs. Mable Miller, Santa Monica, Cal., and one brother, William Hammond, Pasadena, Cal.

The funeral was held Sunday at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church. Burial was made in Hillington cemetery. The Masons had charge of the funeral at the grave. - Our Morris Reporter.
