LEBANON – Rev. James Earl Pennington, 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Greystone Health Care in Blountville.

Born Nov. 11, 1917, in Mountain City, Tenn., a son of the late Elmer Lee Roy Pennington and the late Okey Mabe Pennington, he was a retired minister of the Pentecostal faith and coal miner. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a lifetime member and former chaplain of the Lebanon VFW Post 9864.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Pennington and Robert (Buddy) Pennington,; and two sisters, Effie Blackwell and Hazel Herald.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Cynthia Quesenberry Pennington, Greystone Health Care, Blountville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Erlene and Bill Lloyd, Lebanon and Rita and Dave Davis, Bristol Tennessee; grandsons, James (Jim) Lloyd and wife Diana, Rural Retreat, Va., and Gary Ellis Jr. and wife Tammy, Bristol Tennessee; three great-grandchildren, Gary Paul Ellis and David Wayne Ellis, both of Bristol Tennessee, and Kelsey Bishop, Rural Retreat; one brother, C.D. Pennington and wife Kathleen, South Boston, Va.; five sisters, Carrie and husband Jack Bundy, Josephine and husband Delbert Fletcher, Louise Hinnegar, Alberta Cowan and husband Dudley and Shirley Wilburn and husband Junior, all of Tazewell; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Lawson officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum in Ketron Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be conducted by the Lebanon VFW Post 9864.
Pallbearers will be members of the Lebanon VFW Post 9864. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Combs Funeral Service is serving the family of Mr. Pennington.
