James has been shown as Mayberry James, but more often as James M.

His parents were:
Thompson White 1796 – 1860
Sarah Greer 1799 – 1860
Both were born in Charleston, Dorchester Co, SC.

His siblings were:
Mary Paulina 1829 – 1902
Susan 1829 –
Charlie Columbus 1832 –
William T. 1834 –
Elizabeth 1852 –

The first four children were born in Charleston. They were living in Gibson Co, TN when James was born in 1838.

On Oct. 29, 1850, James listed as Mayberry, age 12. lived with his parents, Thompson, 54, & Sarah, 50, in District 15, Gibson Co, TN, where his father supported the family by farming, his older sons helping him. Other siblings were Susan, age 21; Paulina, 19; Columbus, 18; & William, 16.

James married Elizabeth Francis McCartney in Gibson Co, TN on Sept. 17, 1859. Like his father & brothers, James was a farmer.

In 1860, James, age 22, & Elizabeth, 18, lived in District 15, Gibston Co, TN with his parents, Thompson, age 62 & Sarah, age 61, & James's two brothers, Columbus, age 27; William T., 25. Thompson was a farmer; his land was valued at $1000 and his personal wealth at $60.

The Civil War had already started when James & Elizabeth's first child, William, was born in August 1861. He favored the side of the Union, enlisting as a Private serving as a guide & scout.

On August 9, 1870, James, age 30, & Elisabeth, age 24, lived in District 17, Gibson Co, TN. Their Post office was Trezevant Station. James was farming & had a personal wealth valued at $200. Their children were William, age 10; James, 4, & Charles, five months.

On June 10, 1880, Jas.M., age 43, & Elizabeth F., 37, lived in Belews, Gibson Co, TN where James supported them by farming. Their children were shown as: William T., 19; Jas. L, 15; Charles C., 11; Robert W., 8; Louther M., 5, & Sarah E., 2. Roberta, who was born on Oct. 20, 1879, wasn't listed in the census, so may have died by this time.

It's very possible that James & Elizabeth traveled from TN to TX by way of wagon train, the common way to travel in that time period.

On June 14, 1900, James, age 65 (April 1835), & Elizabeth, 61 (Oct. 1838), lived in Justice Precinct 4, Rains Co, TX with their oldest child, William, age 41 (Aug. 1858), a farmer, who was widowed. James & Elizabeth had been married 45 years. She had given birth to nine children, seven of whom were still living. William's grandson, Oscar White, age 7, lived with him; also a boarder, Luther B. Carroll, 26, from NC who helped with the farming.

James died in Point, Rains Co, TX in 1901. He was sixty-one. (By 1890 the little community of Point had an estimated population of fifty, a public school, and four churches.)
