Joseph was raised on the family farm in southwestern Iowa County. On May 29, 1895, he married Clara Yearian of rural Deep River. They were the parents of five children; John Lurane Pfeaster, Alva Murl Pfeaster, Louisa Pearl Pfeaster, Edith Margaret Pfeaster, and Amos Joseph Pfeaster.

It should be noted; Joseph changed the spelling of his last name from Pfiester to Pfeaster to avoid mail delivery issues with someone who lived on the same mail route with the same name.
