Jerome came to America from Germany with his parents. They arrived in New York City on May 19, 1854 aboard the ship "Charles Hill."

German recrds show the actual German spelling of his given name was Hieronimus. He Americanized his name to "Jerome."

Jerome was born at Ceminniger, Germany, Sept. 8, 1836. He was the oungest of three children of Joseph and Afra Pfiester. When 18 years of age he came with his parents to the United States and settled on a farm near Loretto, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1868 he came west with two companions, Swift and Morris of packing hose fame. They stopped off in Chicago and he came on stopping in Iowa County where he bought a farm, on which he lived for 52 years passing from this life Nov. 4, 1920 at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 28 days.
On July 11, 1870 he was united in marriage to Margaret Dersch of Millersburg, Iowa. It was a conceded fact in the neighborhood where he lived that no worthy cause was ever started where financial aid or help was required, but that he was always ready and willing to help. He firmly believed in the Ten Commandments of the Bible and tried to live by them in his active life.
