Shortly after her birth, Mary Susan's mother died. In 1861, her father married Naomi Wilkins, with whom he had children Nancy, Thomas, John Levi, Docia Anna, and William Garland.
Sometime after the 1880 Census, Mary Susan's family moved from Humphreys County, Tennessee, to Johnson County, Texas, which is roughly 30 miles south of Fort Worth.
On April 10, 1886, Mary Susan married Jefferson William Cunningham. The couple's first child, Foster, was born in March of 1887. It is believed that the family was living in or near Tyler, Texas, (located about 25 miles east of Dallas) at the time.
Mary Susan and her family moved to Oklahoma in 1889 as part of the first Oklahoma Land Rush. Her husband, a carpenter and contractor, built the family residence in Oklahoma City while the family lived in a tent. Before the home could be completed, and shortly after the territory was opened for settlement, Mary Susan gave birth to her first daughter, Oklahoma Belle, on May 19, 1889. Oklahoma Belle was renown as the first child born in Oklahoma City after the opening of the territory. Daughters Occa Jefferson and Mary Myrtle followed in 1891 and 1893.
After her husband's death in 1917, Mary Susan continued to live in Oklahoma City, at times with her daughter Oklahoma Belle and her family. Mary Susan died on September 23, 1943.
Scott Day Freeman, great grandson, wrote the forgoing memorial, which was last updated on April 10, 2014.
