Donald H. "Doc" Dawson, 91 years old and a lifelong resident of Monroeville, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Village of Heritage following an illness of several weeks.

He was born on Sunday, December 25, 1921 in Monroeville, Indiana the son of the late Harold R. Dawson and the late Eulalia M. (Martin) Dawson. He married Agnes M. Schall on September 12, 1945 in St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville.

Donald was a sergeant in the United States Army during WWII where he was in the 19th Depot Repair Squadron. He was in the Rhineland Battle and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign and received one bronze star. He was honorably discharged in October 1945.

He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville where he had been a former usher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #864 in Decatur and the American Legion Post #420 in Monroeville.

Donald retired in 1985 as a Postal Clerk at the United States Post Office in Monroeville after forty-three years of service. He had also formerly worked as a funeral assistant at the former Marquart & Jacobs Funeral Home and Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Agnes M. Dawson of Monroeville; daughter, Rose M. (Jerry) Jacobs of Monroeville; son, Michael A. (Nancy) Dawson of Grabill; son, Lawrence E. Dawson of Monroeville; son, Patrick G. (Margaret) Dawson of Fort Wayne; daughter, Therese A. (James) Altman of Monroeville; brother, Daniel (Nede) Dawson of Rotonda West, Florida; sister, Eleanor Van Horn of Monroeville; sister, Mary (Maurice) Kline of New Haven; six grandchildren, Andy Jacobs, Tony Jacobs, Trevor Dawson, Evans Dawson, Elisa Roehm & Kevin Altman; and two great-grandchildren, Madalyn & Jack Jacobs.

Preceding Donald in death were one child, Tommy Dawson (age 7); sister, Patricia Dawson; and two brothers, Louis & Earl Dawson.

A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2013, in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian burial in the St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville with Fr. Joseph D'Souza officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Rose Catholic Cemetery with Military Graveside Services by American Legion and VFW Posts of Monroeville.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, January 15 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville. A Rosary Service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are Masses to the church, Monroeville EMS, or St. Joseph Catholic School Centenary Fund.

Serving as pallbearers will be Trevor Dawson, Evan Dawson, Andy Jacobs, Tony Jacobs, Elisa Roehm, & Kevin Altman.
