French Nobility. He was the only son of Raoul I and Petronille de Aquitaine. He succeeded his father in 1152 as Comte de Vermandois but had to resign in favour of his elder sister when he caught leprosy, but he continued to bear the title. He was married to Marguerite de Flandre in 1160 but the marriage was never consummated and they separated soon after.
