He was born Printon Garber (or Brinton per 1860 and 1870 US Census), son of Isaac Garber and Hannah J (Clemens) Garber. He changed his name to John H. Allen in 1884.

John H. Allen, who came to Sauk Centre 54 years ago, passed away at his home, near the north city limits, on Highway 71, Sunday morning at 4:15 o'clock. He had been ailing for the past two and one-half years, but was up and around until a week before his death, which was caused by a heart ailment.

Mr. Allen was born at Spring City, Pennsylvania, July 12, 1851. He had lived an exemplar life and at the time of death was 85 years old. He was a stone mason and plasterer by trade and he followed this for fifty years, when an injury forced him to retire.

In the year of 1877 he came to Minnesota, and in 182 he located in Sauk Centre where he has since made his home. On November 11, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Marie Schaeffer, the ceremony being solemnized in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Allen resided in their present home for 49 years.

Three sons and two daughters were born to Mr. and Mes. Allen, all of whom together with the mother, survive. The children areL Harry Allen, of Grey Eagle; Howard Allen, of Dawson N. D..; Ben Allen, of New Westminster, British Columbia; Mrs. Kate Burow of Sacramento, Cal.; Mrs. Alice Gray, of Washington D. C. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Wells of Phoenixville, Penn., and seven grandchildren.

The last sad rites were held at the Sauk Centre Funeral Parlors Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, with Rev. Peter Jansen, as the pastor. Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery. The pallbearers were: J. J. Costello, Lew Canfield, Fred Lewis, Myron Taylor, H. LeSuer and A. J. Bohne. Mrs. George Berggreen sang two beautiful solos, "The Vacant Chair" and "Abide By Me". She was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Russell Cooper.

Mr. Allen became well known through his building activities, and he had many friends who mourn his passing. He lived a long and active life.

Relatives from out-of-town in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Allen and children, of Grey Eagle; Howard Allen of Dawson, N. D.; Mrs. Kate Burow, of Sacramento, Cal.; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schaeffer and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Schaeffer, of Elbow Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Schaeffer and son, Edwin, of Albany, Minn.; Mrs. Emma Tobolt and son, of Milwaukee, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schaeffer, and Mrs. Wyman Schaeffer, of Elbow Lake, Minn.

Mrs. Alice Gray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen was unable to attend the funeral services. She had been at the parental home for an extended visit and returned to Washington, D. C., about ten days ago.
