Published Jan 1,1999 in the "Douglas Dispatch" Douglas, Arizona: Mr. Mercedes G. Pinon of Douglas died December 30, 1998 at the Southeast Arizona Medical Center. Mr. Pinon was born October 5, 1921 in Pirtleville, Arizona and has been a lifelong Arizona resident.

He served in the US Army during WWII receiving his honorable discharge July 20, 1945.

Mr. Pinon was preceded in death by his brothers, Jose Maria Pinon and Clemente Pinon; sisters, Teresa P. Molina, Inez P. Amaya, Francisca P. Smith and Dolores P. Burroughs.

He was a member of the American Legion, DAV, VFW and charter member of the Bushmasters club.

Surviving is his wife, Rosa Ruiz Pinon of Douglas; daughter, Petra Rodriguez Flores (Juan) of Phoenix; son, Jose Ruiz Pinon (Melissa) of Phoenix; sister, Isabel Walters of Douglas; brother, Ignacio Gonzales Pinon of California; grandchildren, Rosemary (Ricardo) Escobar, Maria Valdez, Frances (Antonio) Rodriguez and Juan Owen and four other grandchildren. Also surviving are 9 great-grandchildren.

A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 1999 at Brown Page Mortuary Chapel. A funeral mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Luke's Church with Father Jim Hobert officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military graveside services by the American Legion and VFW.

Pallbearers who will serve are Frank Pinon, Gilbert Smith, Antonio Vaca, Ernesto Smith, Enrique Vaca and Baldemar Smith. Honorary pallbearers are Guillermo Smith, Freddy Smith, Rafael Amaya Rodriguez, Jr., Rafael Rodriguez, Sr., Ramon Vaca, Jose Pinon, Art Estrada and Ernesto Smith."
