SPALDING, JOSEPH M. "UNCLE JOE," 85, of Louisville, passed away Sunday January 6, 2013. Joe was born in Lebanon, KY to the late William and Mary Acquin Spalding. He accepted the 2005 Bell Award in recognition of his service to Locust Grove, The American Red Cross, Franciscan Shelter House, Brownsboro Park and Bernheim Forest. He was a graduate of the University of Louisville and a retired chemical engineer for Celanese Corp. He was also a U.S. Army veteran. He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Sarah L. Abell, Rev. William A. Spalding, Florence E. Spalding, Albert D. Spalding, Dr. James A. Spalding, Lee Mattingly Spalding and Catherine M. Battcher. Survivors include his sisters, Mary Acquin Schneider (Claude) of Gainesville, GA and Sr. Rita Spalding, SCN of Nazareth, KY; in-laws, Barbara Spalding of Grand Rapids, MI and Joseph Battcher of Shepherdsville, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, with burial of his cremated remains at a later date. Visitation will be at the church Tuesday from noon until service time. Ratterman and Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road, have been entrusted with funeral arrangements. The family would greatly appreciate honoring their request in asking that any memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, take the form of donation to Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Missions, P.O.
