"Bessie E Southwick Sheffer, 100, of Buells Corners Road, Spartansburg, died at her home on Friday, Jan 4, 2013. She was born on July 15, 1912, in Garland, a daughter of the late Fred O and Amy Lobdell Beardsley. Bessie was raised and educated in the Garland area. She worked many jobs throughout the years, including the family dairy farm at Buells Corners, the Presbyterian Home and Sunset Manor, in Titusville, Garland Farms, Buells Corners Store and the Dutch Treat Restaurant. Her main priority was raising and caring for her family. She was the oldest member of Free Methodist Church in Centerville. Bessie enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles. She also loved to garden. She kept her gardens up until she was 98 years old. Bessie also loved dancing, especially the Polka, and enjoyed spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, Bessie was preceded in death by her first husband Aric Clinton Southwick; whom she married in July 1930, her second husband Jack Sheffer, whom she married in April 1983, a son George Southwick; three step-sons Ellwood, Edward and Eugene Southwick; a sister Gertrude Snyder; and three brothers Mike, Clair and Alfred Beardsley. She was also preceded by three sons-in-law; three grandsons; two great-granddaughters and one great great-grandson. Bessie is survived by five daughters...and a son...31 grandchildren, 89 great-grandchildren, 35 great great-grandchildren, 2 great great great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to call at the Bracken Funeral Home, 211 Mechanic St, Spartansburg...and attend the funeral service at Valley View Mennonite Church, 24313 State Hwy 89, Spartansburg, on Tuesday at 10 am. Pastor Charles Riel, of Free Methodist Church, Centerville, will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg."
