༺⊰❁ Elva Mae Sterling Kinner Whitlock was the only child of Robert Leroy and Nancy Marie Campbell Sterling, born on March 15, 1947 in Amelia, Ohio.

While her father was in the hospital for tuberculosis in Dayton, Ohio her mother abandoned Elva, leaving her to be cared for and deeply loved by her Grandma Elva Sterling, and aunts and uncles. Later in June of 1953 her father married Meriel Anna Steinberger, who loved and raised Elva Mae as if she were her own daughter. It wasn't until the mid to late 1970s that she was reconciled again with her birth mother. After meeting her birth mother Elva told Meriel she was her real mother. Though Elva did eventually reconcile with her mother Elva told they never did bond deeply as mother and daughter. At least they were able to meet again and form a caring relationship nonetheless.

In 1964 Elva married Ronald Kinner of Morrow, Warren County, Ohio, and in September she had Kristine Alice Kinner. While she was carrying Kristine she had a severe case of scarlet fever and the baby was born deaf. When Kristine was about 6 months old Elva and Ronnie separated and soon divorced. When Kristine was around 20 years old she had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Whitlock, born November 21, 1984 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, USA by a young man whom she met at a school for the deaf she attended in Indiana. They never married.

Elva met Brand Kingsley Whitlock in Cincinnati, Ohio around 1966. After they married Brand adopted Kristine as his own daughter. They had two sons together: Brand Kingsley Whitlock, Jr. and Stephen Laurence Whitlock, two years apart, both born on their Grandpa Bob's birthday November 18. Brand Kingsley Whitlock, Jr, (or more correctly, the III) was an excellent artist and later would make a name for himself as an illustrator. Steve would grow up to be an excellent mechanic.

When Kristine was 6 years old she was enrolled at St. Rita's School of the Deaf where she quickly learned sign language. The grandparents of Kristine Alice (Kinner Whitlock) Abner: Earl Lester Kinner and Dora Ellen Reed Kinner. When the family lived in a rented farm house on Dallasburg Road in Loveland, Ohio the home caught on fire due to a faulty wire in the furnace. The fire occurred at night when everyone was asleep, except Kris. She saw the smoke rising up out of the vents and knew there was a fire somewhere. She quickly got her brothers up and took them outside to safety. Then she went back in and got her parents up, and they all made it out safely. By the time the fire department arrived most of the home was ruined. They had to move to another home, and eventually ended up living in Newtown, Ohio before heading out to Los Angeles. At St. Rita's School For The Deaf Kris had just learned about home safety during a fire and what to do if there was a fire. Due to the excellent teaching at the school she knew to remain calm and to get everyone out to safety. Luckily she was awake that night in the wee hours on that cold January night in 1973, because she saved the lives of her entire family. I miss that old farm house on Dallasburg Road. It was a simple, but beautiful home that had a wonderful energy of its own. I stayed there the summer of 1972 to help out when Elva and Brand had just moved in. That old farm had a way of growing on a person and settling right into their heart as the walls embraced them with its loving energy. Some say it was energy from the son of the owner who had loved the home dearly, and often spent time at that farm. Sadly his life was cut short while serving in Vietnam. His father missed his beloved son so much he couldn't bear to sell it, so he rented it out. His son's things were stored in a back room that had been his son's room, and the door was always locked. Almost every night very late someone would drive down the long and quiet lane to sit in the turn about facing the house just looking. I think his friends and others who loved and missed the son as well would come there longing, hoping to see him one more time. Sometimes I think they did get a glimpse of him walking the halls and the steps late on moonlit nights. After all it was his home, and he always did love it there. I hope he has found his eternal rest and peace with the Lord. I think God knew how much he loved that farm, and would let him visit it from time to time. Rest well beloved.

Elva loved to garden, knit and crochet, and collect bone china tea pots and tea cups with matching saucers. She was an excellent artist and loved antiques. She made the best fried potatoes! She loved her cups of coffee, and Pepsi chilled straight from the glass bottle. Her all time favorite singer was Elvis Presley.

She contracted kidney cancer which later claimed her life.

May my sister Elva Mae rest in peace and the love of God.

NOTE Nancy Marie Campbell Sterling Tallman was not a Whitlock. She was never Nancy Whitlock. Whitlock was the married name for her daughter Elva Mae. Also this is Victor's actual resting place Victor Rolland Tallman.
