ANNIS ADELL APPLEBY FOGELMAN

Little Rock - Annis Adell Appleby Fogleman, 97, of Little Rock, widow of Chief Justice John A. Fogleman died Monday, April 26, 2010. Mrs. Fogleman, born in 1912, was a descendant of early settlers of Northwest Arkansas. The daughter of Gertrude Baylor Appleby and George Appleby, she grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was one of four Appleby daughters who were very near in age and were the closest of friends all of their lives. The sisters attended the University of Arkansas simultaneously and all were member of Chi Omega Fraternity. The Appleby home on College Avenue was a lively place with fellow students and friends always welcomed. Mrs. Fogleman met John Fogleman when he was a student at the University of Arkansas and she was a student at Peabody High School on the University campus. They were married three years later, a marriage that lasted seventy years. Their's was a very happy marriage which began in the depression and endured the trials and separation of World War II. While her husband served in the U. S. Army, Mrs. Fogleman returned to her home in Fayetteville with her children. After the war the couple was reunited and returned to Marion to raise their three children and for Judge Fogleman to reopen his law practice. The Foglemans resided in Marion, Arkansas until Judge Fogleman was elected to the Arkansas Supreme Court in 1996. At that time they moved to Little Rock, but always maintained their home in Marion. Mrs. Fogleman was the consummate wife and mother. She was an excellent homemaker and cook. She was "home room mother" for all three of their children nearly every year they were in school. Judge and Mrs. Fogleman were regular attendees at the Arkansas Bar Association meetings and she greatly enjoyed accompanying him on trips his professional associations required. In later years, the Foglemans traveled the world together. Her age did not deter her from the most daunting of trips. They were both avid Razorback fans and traveled to many football games over the years. Mrs. Fogleman has doted on all of her grandchildren and in recent years, her great-grandchildren. Her home and family have been the center of her life. She was a member of the Marion United Methodist Church and was active in the Women's Society of Christian Service. Her hobby was reading and until the last few weeks she always had a book going and read the newspaper from front to back every day. She was a member of Little Rock's Thursday Book Club. Mrs. Fogleman is survived by her son, John A. Fogleman, Jr., and his wife Judy; a daughter, Adell Fogleman and a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Leven Williams. Her surviving grandchildren are Henry Rector, Mary Rector Fields, Susan Rector, Deanne Thomas, Debra Williamson, John Fogleman III, Anabeth Bartholomew and Charles Williams III. In addition she leaves fifteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brothers-in-law, Franklin G. Fogleman and Julian B. Fogleman and his wife, Margaret, all of Marion. Mrs. Fogleman was preceded in death by her sisters, Mildred Mitchell, Marian Manlove, Helen Virginia Young and a brother, John Tate Appleby. The family would like to recognize and thank Mrs. Fogleman's caregivers for whom she cared deeply, Carolyn (Shay) Danner, Alice Harnett and from Arkansas Hospice, Cheryl Kendrick, RN and the Reverend Pat Singer. A visitation will be at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 28, from 4:30 p.m., until 6:30 p.m. The funeral service will be at Marion United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 1st at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Crittenden Memorial Park.
