Dr. W. Howard Hawkins, 85, of Burke County, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jan. 2, 2013. He was born April 17, 1927, in McDowell County, NC to the late William Crawford Hawkins and Barbara Alice Mashburn. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Pulaski, VA.
Howard was well known for sharing the gospel and during his ministry he was a devoted pastor for approximately 53 years. He served at Cedar Rock Baptist, Yadkin Valley Baptist, Trinity Baptist in VA, Lakeview Baptist, and other churches in the Longview Community of NC, Flat Rock, Michigan, and Pembrook, VA. He was fortunate to go on mission trips to South Africa and Brazil. He has had the privilege of Baptizing and marrying numerous people and comforting many who have lost loved ones. He will be deeply missed but his life will be celebrated because of his "Home-going."
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosa Lee Houk Hawkins, and his sons, Baby Boy Hawkins and Teddy Ross Hawkins, and his second wife, Maudie Hodge Hawkins. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne Renee Smart and her husband Troy Smart of Lenoir; sons, Gerald Lee Hawkins and his wife Delores of Bethlehem, NC, William Earl Hawkins of Highpoint, NC and Rev. Phillip Kirk Hawkins and his wife Nicci of Lenoir, NC, son, Ted Hodge and his wife Carol, and daughter Mona Conrad and her husband David all from Virginia. He has 14 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held 3:00pm Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at Lakeview Baptist Church located at 325 Shasta Lane, Lenoir, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 pm prior to service at Lakeview. The Rev. Ron Burgett, Rev. Robert Brown and Rev. T. Daren Smart Jr. will be officiating the funeral and Rev. Jesse Crooks will be officiating at the graveside. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church Building Fund in lieu of flowers.
