Linden May, 91, died on January 17, 2012. He was born August 26, 1920, at Lehigh, KS, the son of Anna Wittman May and Jacob May. He moved to Topeka with his parents in 1922.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; sons Brad (Andee) and John (Debbie); grandsons John Michael, (Rhonda), Todd (Nicole) and Darwin May, all of Topeka; a step-grandson Jared Hothan, Houston, TX; two step-great grandsons, Levi Jenkins, Topeka, and Grayson Hothan, Houston; and a great-grandson, Eli May, Topeka.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Roland May, Jacob May, and Orlando May; four sisters: Irene Anguish, Vivian Scofield, Evangeline Porter, and Evelyn Scott. He is survived by two sisters: Henrietta Gleason, Topeka; and Alvina Wettengel, Pace, Florida.
Linden attended Lutheran School and Curtis Junior High in Topeka, and graduated from Topeka High in 1938. He attended Strickler's Business College, and was employed by AT&SF Railway from 1941 to 1982, most of those years working as a clerk in the office of the Santa Fe Unclaimed Freighthouse in Topeka. When that facility closed, he transferred to the Auditor of Revenues Department.
He served in the U. S. Army Air Force in the South Pacific Theater during WWII from 1942 through 1945.
Linden and Esther Draper were married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Topeka on August 28, 1949. They enjoyed traveling and attended watercolor classes and art shows throughout the United States. He was an accomplished artist; his works were displayed and sold in galleries in Taos, NM; Lawrence, KS, and Topeka, and are included in many corporate and private collections.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, a signature member of the Kansas Watercolor Society, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railroad Employees, Santa Fe Railroad Retirees Club, and American Legion Capitol Post 1 of Topeka. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks Union, and believed all his life in the justice of unions and collective bargaining.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 19th, at St. John's Lutheran Church.
