Thomas Elgie was born 26 Dec 1816 at Dalton-on-Tees, Yorkshire, England to Robert Elgie (1787-1868) and Elizabeth Hopps (1789-1874). He was christened 14 Jan 1817 at St. Peters Church at Croft-on-Tees, Yorkshire.
He immigrated to Canada about 1841 settling in Toronto where he ran the Bay Horse Inn on Yonge Street until about 1848 when he moved to Cooksville in Peel Co., Canada West (Ontario).
Thomas married Elizabeth Cook (abt 1822 - 1 Feb 1849) 9 May 1843 at St. James' Cathedral in Toronto. Elizabeth died 1 Feb 1849 at Chinguacousy Twp, Peel, Canada West (Ontario).
He married Elizabeth Beckwith 22 Aug 1849 at St. Peter's Church, Springfield (now Erindale), Peel Co., Canada West (Ontario).
About 1851 he moved to Yorkville, York Co., Canada West and ran the Red Lion Inn until sometime before 1856. On the 1861 Census he was back in Toronto Twp., Peel Co., Canada West (Ontario) and in 1866 was likely running William Kennedy's Farmer's or Atlantic Hotel in Cooksville.
Sometime before 1871 he started farming on 200 Acres Lot 15, III Concession from the Bay, York Twp., York Co., Ontario (SE corner of Baywiew and Eglington) and continued to do so until his death at Yorkville (likely 72 Bismark, now Asquith Avenue) on 4 Jul 1880.
