Many called Joseph, Dr. Stewart because of his ability for using herbal medicines for healing. Joseph learned many of his healing techniques from the Native Americans. He was also a miner.

Joseph Abram Stewart crossed the plains in a covered wagon with his parents, siblings, a large group of 1,220 Mormon individuals with their leader Mormon President Brigham Young. Joseph at the young age of 10 made his journey to Utah. Joseph and his family traveled in the 1848 2nd company of Mormon pioneers. The Mormon pioneers were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), also known as Latter-day Saints, who migrated across the United States from the Midwest to the Salt Lake Valley in what is today the U.S. state of Utah.
