He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ottolie D. Bruce; two daughters, Carol B. Johnson and husband, Jack, and Linda E. Bruce; his son, John Wayne and his wife, Gail; and son-in-law, Bobby S. Palmore. He was the grandfather of 12, one deceased; great-grandfather of 19, one deceased; and great-great-grandfather of one. General was the son of the late Homer and Laura Bruce of Caroline Co. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Aubrey C., Wesley, Elwood, Frank, Shirley and Betty. He is survived by Virginia, Evelyn, Mae, Leonard, Francis, Robert Lee, Dorothy and Ethel.
General was a lifetime farmer and formerly owned the first Hanover Fruit and Vegetable Market in Ashland. He was a member of Doswell Ruritans and Ashland Moose Lodge No. 2099. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Ashland. General fought a long battle with cancer, and he will be dearly missed by his family.
The family requests any donations be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Ashland, Va. or Vitas Hospice, who took loving care of General and his family. The family will receive friends in the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, followed by burial in Signal Hill Memorial Park.
