Elva Edna (Ratzlaff) Quiring was born February 23, 1918 to Heinrich (Henry) J. and Anna L. (Janzen) Ratzlaff on a farm near Henderson, York County, Nebraska. She was the second child of nine children and was the second generation to be born in America. Elva passed into heaven on December 19, 2012.

Upon the Confession of her Faith, Elva was baptized by Abraham W. Friesen at the Bethesda Mennonite Church, Henderson, NE on the day after Pentecost, Monday, June 1, 1936 a few days after graduating from Henderson High School.

Following graduation she attended York College, York, NE for one year to earn a teaching certificate. She then taught country schools at District #1 Farmers Valley in Hamilton County, NE for two years and two years at District #37 York County, NE. Following her country school teaching experience she decided to complete her college education at Bethel College, North Newton, KS graduating in 1944. After receiving her BS degree in Home Economics and English she taught in Randall, KS schools for one year. Following her Kansas teaching experience she taught Home Economics and English at Freeman Junior College and Academy, Freeman, South Dakota for 5 years.

While teaching at the College and Academy she met and became friends with the business education teacher, Adeline Quiring. Through Adeline she met Sam A. Quiring, Adeline's brother. Sam A. Quiring and Elva Ratzlaff were married September 1, 1949 at Bethesda Mennonite Church, Henderson, Nebraska.

Following her marriage Elva and Sam farmed near Mountain Lake, Minnesota. Elva joined the First Mennonite Church of Mountain Lake and served in many positions within the church. Elva lived her Christian life through service in the church and committed her life to her family and to the church. Sam and Elva had three children, Dennis, Grace, and Clarice in their 60 year marriage.

Sam and Elva retired from the farm and moved to town in Mountain Lake, MN in 1986. They took several trips to countries around the world and visited their children who were all living in Kansas. In 1998 they moved to Goessel, KS, in the independent living area of Bethesda Home. Both Sam and Elva became members of the Alexanderwohl Church in Goessel, KS shortly after their move to Kansas. Deteriorating health necessitated moving into Bethesda Home after several years in independent living. Sam died peacefully sitting in his rocking chair, holding the hand of the love of his life on March 15th, 2008.

Elva is survived by her children; Dennis (Annette) Quiring of Newton, KS, Grace (Harlan) Bartel of Newton, KS, and Clarice (Robert) Hostetler of Dodge City, KS, eight grandchildren, Elissa (Dustin) Miracle, Gretchen (DJ) Bookout, Karl Quiring, Anna Quiring, Konrad Quiring, Sierra (Alan) Hostetler, Mariah Hostetler, Bryce Hostetler, and two great grandchildren, Easton Miracle and Irelyn Bookout. Elva's surviving siblings include Alvina (LG) DaVolt, Leanna (Levi) Peters, Violet Ratzlaff and sister in law Jeanne Ratzlaff. Surviving siblings from the Quiring side are: Adeline (Cornelius) Friesen, Waldo and Geneva Stoesz.

Preceding her in death were her parents Henry J. and Anna, husband Sam A. Quiring and siblings Malita & Harry Friesen, Lee (Jeanne) Ratzlaff, Marvin & Edna Ratzlaff, Zella & Arley Huebert, and Elfrieda Ratzlaff. Siblings preceding her in death from the Quiring side are Dave & Frieda Toews and Cornelius Friesen.
