Married to Devorguil de Burgh, eldest daughter of John de Burgh of Wakerley, Nothamptonshire by Cecily daughter of Sir John de Bailiol of Barnard Castle, Durham. Married in 1259, they had one son and two daughters; Walter, Christian and Blanche.
Secondly, married to Eleanor de Ferrers, daughter of Sir Robert de Ferrers, 6th Earl of Derby and Eleanor de Bohun, daughter of Sir Humphrey. Married before 11 Mar 1290 at the King's Chapel at Westminster. They had one sons and one daughter; Sir Robert and Ida, wife of Robert de la Warde.
He married a third time to Alice de Montfort, daughter of Peter de Montfort and widow of Sir Warin de Lisle who died about Dec 1296.
Robert was summoned to Parliament from 1295 to 1325 as Roberto filio Walteri, where he became Lord FitzWalter. He fought at the Battle of Falkirk, was present at the seige of Caerlaverock Castle, and signed the Barons' letter top Pope Boniface. He had licence to go on a pilgrimage beyond the seas in 1310 and 1317.
