George Albert Eppenbaugh was born October 7, 1913, at O'Neill, NE, to Albert and Kathryn (Reichert) Eppenbaugh. He moved to Hereford, SD, at age 3 and attended Doyle School at Hereford. He grew up at Hereford.
George married Ruth Denker on October 30, 1940. The couple farmed and ranched on the original family place until it was sold in 1991.
In addition to fanning and ranching, George enjoyed working on machinery and cars and was always willing to help a neighbor get a vehicle running. George always considered himself a cowboy and broke several horses in his lifetime. But the job he enjoyed most was the 16 years he spent running the county maintainer, grading the roads and he took a lot of pride in the job he did. He was also always ready in heavy snows to plow out the access so neighbors could get to town.
George, 84, Sturgis, died Monday, February 9, 1998, at the Sturgis Long Term Care Center.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Eppenbaugh, Rapid City; one daughter and her husband, Jeanne and Mike Iversen, Rapid City; one son, John Eppenbaugh, Aurora, CO; one sister, Ruby Paulsen, Sturgis; one grandson, Michael Iversen, Rapid City; two nephews; and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mildred Repaal.
