Thomas Hudson was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to James Hudson and his wife (McCauslin). The family moved about 1820 from Lancaster County to Westmoreland County where Thomas married Mary Kunkle/Kunkel. In 1850, the family was in Allegheny Township. In 1855, they moved to Armstong County and in 1863 to a farm in South Buffalo Township where he spent the remainder of his life.

Thomas Hudson owned two steamships and several barges and worked on the Allegheny River. In the summer of 1876 his grandson, James Thomas McCulloch, worked with him hauling oil for John D. Rockefeller from the Central Oil Refinery to an elevator on the Monagahala River. Thomas Hudson's six sons were also steamboat captains and pilots on the Allegheny River.

1) Elizabeth, born about 1931
2) Josiah or Joseph P, born 16 April 1838 in Westmoreland Co., PA; married to Anne E., born about 1845 and died before 1880. They had seven children. Lived in South Buffalo Township.
