Credited with the invention of the backhand, left-handed tennis player Bertha Townsend was US singles champion in 1888 and 1889. She was inducted into the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame in 1974, and later into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Townsend was the daughter of wealthy Philadelphia attorney Henry C. Townsend and Georgiana Lawrence Talman. She grew up in the Chestnut Hill district of the city. In 1891 Bertha Townsend married Dr. Harry Toulmin. They had two daughters: Marian Priestley Toulmin and Frances Biddle Toulmin.
