This is a brief history of a man from the Waynesburg area who meant the world to me, Faye (May) Cox, d/o Willie Walker May.
Leander J, May, my grandfather, was the eldest of nine children born to Elza W. May and Sallie Dotson. Elza and wife and seven children moved to Lincoln Co. ca 1907 - 1909, leaving their oldest son, Leander J., and their oldest daughter, Louvada Burke, living in Floyd Co., Prestonsburg, KY. Elza lived on Ellison Ridge and later bought 500 acres on Fishing Creek. My understanding is that this land was divided into 50-acre plots and passed down to his heirs.
Leander J. May and Julia Baldridge were married 26 Jun 1907 in Floyd Co., near a place called Bonanza, KY. They had two children, Willie Walker, b 31 May 1908, and Everett Lee, b 28 Sep 1911. My grandmother d 9 Mar 1912, leaving Granddad to rear two sons - one four years old, the other only seven months.
Great-grandfather and Great-grandmother May took a horse-drawn wagon from Lincoln Co. to Floyd Co. and brought back Granddad Leander J. and his two small boys. The three of them moved in with Granddad's parents and seven children, making a really full house of 12 persons, covering three generations. Granddad helped his father on the farm and also worked in the Elza May Store in the Ellison Ridge area.
